Bimal Kumar Bose - 1956 EE

Bimal K. Bose (’56EE) currently holds the Condra Chair of Excellence in Power Electronics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he is responsible for graduate teaching and research programs in power electronics for the last thirteen years (1987- ). Concurrently, he held the positions of Chief Scientist (1987-89) and Distinguished Scientist (1989- 00 ) at Power Electronics Applications Center operated by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). He is also Honorary Professor of Shanghai University (1991 - ), China University of Mining and Technology (1995 - ) and Xian Mining Institute (1998 - ), P.R. China. In addition, he is Honorary Director (1998 - ) of Electrical Engg. Institute of Xian Mining Institute and Senior Adviser of Beijing Power Electronics Research and Development Center, China.
Dr. Bose received B.E. degree from Bengal Engineering College in (May) 1956, M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1960, and Ph.D. degree from Calcutta University in 1966. He came from Khalis Khali, Khulna ( then E. Pakistan) and studied in Bhita M.P. Institution, Burdwan for Matriculation (1950) and Asutosh College for I.Sc. degree (1952).

Prior to his current position, Dr. Bose was a research engineer in General Electric Corporate Research and Development, Schenectady, NY for eleven years (1976-87) and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY for five years (1971-76). In 1971, he emigrated to USA with his wife Arati and daughter Papia. His professional expertise spans practically the entire spectrum of power electronics and motor drives, and he has given extensive research contributions in power converters, ac drives, microcomputer control, electric/hybrid vehicle drives; and expert system, fuzzy logic and neural network applications in power electronics. He holds 21 U.S. Patents for his inventions, published more than 150 papers and authored/edited 5 books. The books are Power Electronics and AC Drives, Prentice Hall, 1986 (translated into Japanese, Chinese and Korean), Adjustable Speed AC Drive Systems, IEEE Press, 1981 (translated into Chinese), Microcomputer Control of Power Electronics, IEEE Press, 1992, Modern Power Electronics, IEEE Press, 1992, and Power Electronics and Variable Frequency Drives, IEEE Press, 1997 (translated into Chinese). His most recent book Modern Power Electronics and AC Drives, Prentice Hall is under publication (June 2001). He has given keynote addresses and invited presentations throughout the world.

Dr. Bose was a faculty member of B.E.College for eleven years (1960-71) where he taught Industrial Electronics, Circuit Theory and Electrotechnology and guided research of many graduate students. He received the Premchand Roychand Scholarship (PRS) and Mouat Gold Medal for research contributions in 1968 and 1970, respectively. After graduation from B.E.College, he had post-graduate training in Tata-Hydro, Bombay for two years.

Among the many awards Dr. Bose received in his career, the following are notable:

IEEE* Millennium Medal (2000) for distinguished professional service and outstanding research contributions

IEEE Continuing Education Award (1997) for exemplary and sustained contributions to continuing education

IEEE Lamme Gold Medal (with $10,000) (1996) for contributions in power electronics and drives

IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Eugene Mittelmann Award (highest) (1994) in recognition of outstanding contributions to research and development in the field of power electronics and a lifetime achievement in the area of motor drives

IEEE Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award (1994) for outstanding achievements in power electronics and drives technology

IEEE Industry Application Society’s Outstanding Achievement Award (highest) (1993) for outstanding contributions in the application of electricity to industry.

IEEE Fellow (1989) (Life Fellow in 1996) for contributions in power electronics and drives technology.

GE Silver Patent Medal (1986) and Publication Award (1985)

In 1983, "Bimal Bose Award in Power Electronics" was introduced by Institition of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), India to promote power electronics research and applications in India. The Award was donated by Dr. Bose but initiated by Department of Electronics, Govt. of India. In 1995, Dr. Bose initiated Power Electronics for Universal Brotherhood (PEUB), an international organization, to promote humanitarian activities for poor and unprevilidged people of world by the power electronics community.

Among his many humanitarian activities, Dr. Bose donated library (building and equipment) and sixteen student scholarships in his village high school in Burdwan for poor students. Dr. Bose firmly believes his Indian values in life, and has always propagated – Honesty, Ambition and Hard Work are the Keys of Life’s Success.

* IEEE is the largest international professional organization
