  • It is Arup Sarkar from BEC. Perhaps we all know about the condition about Abhijit Das (Khoga) (Arch'85), who is suffering from a rare disease named Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system, an autoimmune disease, that can range from relatively benign to somewhat disabling to devastating, as communication between the brain and other parts of the body is disrupted.

The first sign of this disease was identified in him during 2001, when he had shown weakness of his lower limbs and had problem to stand up. He was admitted to Bangur Institute of Neurology (BIN) at Kolkata for a month sometime during 2002-3 and was under treatment of Dr. Shyamal Kumar Das. There are various forms of MS, and Khoga is suffering from Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, which is the worst kind of it. Since then his condition has been continuously deteriorated. At present he is completely bed-ridden and the right side is paralyzed, which is now affecting the left side slowly and steadily.

In February 2007, he was suddenly attacked with symptoms of hiccup that could not be arrested at Haldia. So his wife Mousumi decided to shift him to West Bank Hospital on February 26. He was admitted to the ICU under Dr. Todi. Now his condition is stable. I saw him yesterday, March 8, and talked with his wife regarding the future course of action. I should say I saw a nerve of steel in her, and the pressure she is taking, the labour she is giving, the pain she is taking for her husband in one hand and to support her son, who is studying in Purulia RKMV, is just unimaginable. I assure you folks, if you would see that in your eyes, it would nothing but tear your heart apart.

Aninda Karforma (86), Sahu (86), Ranjit (84) and Amitava Roy (90) and I talked among ourselves. What is needed now is a proper and long term treatment for Khoga. For last one and a half years they stopped visiting (BIN). They haven't thought of going to best hospitals in India and abroad, they could not contact the best neuro Doctors ever. Here we can help. Not only we can think of making a fund, but also extend your suggestions and course of action that has to be taken for him. Yesterday Mousumi told "He loved the college life and kept himself unchanged for all these years and I accepted that, because I knew that will keep him jovial. As a wife I have a right on him, and as his friends you have equal right on him too." I could not help my tears out.

He constantly needs Psycho-Therapy and Physio-Therapy. Some new drugs are now available at Europe that may cost very large, but first of all what is needed is the contact of a very esteemed Doctor, and the preparation to fight this battle.

Perhaps this would cost anything between 5 to 10 lacs.

Khaga needs happiness. Nothing happened, Ranjit said, get well and we together will go to the world cup. Khoga grinned with hope. Let us all ignite the rays of hope in him.

  • Update on August 28, 2007

    Dear Friends,

This is Mousumi Das, wife of Mr. Abhijit Das, B. Arch, 1985 batch. Friends I have come here to thank all of you who have come forward to help me in my hour of need . I have no words to thank you. Still I pay my sincere gratitude to all my dear friends who have contributed their financial as well as mental and spiritual assiatance to me And my Ailing Husband.
On the other hand I am trying my best to fight the disease on behalf of my husband. Abhijit Das has joined office, that too for name sake. I had a talk to the office authority and prayed for their cooperation. They have agreed to consider Abhijit’s case provided he attends office at least three days in a week. As the office , right now , is 15 KM away from my residence I have arranged a Maruti van and a wheel Chair to carry him to office. As  Abhijit is well built, I needed man power to take care of the patient, to carry him to the toilets and also help him to do the physiotherapy and also to attend him in my absence. So, I have appointed an attendant to do the needful.

Right now he is being treated with Ayurvedic and herbal medicines. Besides Accupresure therapy and Reiki therapy is also being carried out. Though there is no further detorriation, improvement is very slow . Because such patients , who are confined to bed, also suffer from psychological problems, I am trying my best to keep him mentally boosted up. If any friend thinks that I should help Abhijit in some other ways then you are free to speak. I am truly looking forward to your advice. I really need your suggestion , advice and guidance.

In the month of March, when the patients’ condition was totally down, the Doctors, Dr. Subhas Mukherjee, Head of the department, Neuro- medicine, Medical college, Kolkata , and his team, Suggested to administer the patient with beta interferon Drugs. With the help of You friends, We were ready to go for the medication but some  friends, after consulting some other doctors of various neurological institutions, suggested that the drug had some serious after effects, like cardiac arrest and renal failure. Even Americans rejected the administration of the drug. The doctors too could not offer any guarantee that the medication will work. To be noted that Abhijit had already been administered with  120 mg of Oncotrone, in  six cycles ( chemo therapy) two years back at Bangur Institute of Neurology, under Prof. S. K. Das. So we had to stop there itself, looking forward for some better alternative.

I also wanted to take the patient to Hardwar, to  Ramdev maharaj ji’s Ashram, but it is difficult for me to take him there right now as he cannot  withstand such a long journey right at this moment. Right now , a person of our locality, who has taken training under Ramdev maharaj ji comes to my house to help the patient to practise  Pranayam. I am in constant touch with Multiple Sclerosis Society of India and also Multiple Sclerosis Society of U.K. who are also keeping me updated with the latest drugs being used for such patients. Research is still on.

I sincerely hope you will be at my side, and help me to fight my odd days.
Thanking you once again, and praying for your cooperation and guidance,
                                                                          Yours sincerely,
                                                                              Mousumi Das

  • An update from Rajdeep Dutta, 88EE on May 1, 2007

Apart from Tania (Tania Pramanik, 2006 Arch) on 29/04/07, I met with Khoga da at his residence as well for similar purpose. Kohoga da (Abhijit Das, 1985 Arch) is now feeling better and can sit down and talk. Till the time his treatment is finalised, he is under Acupressure therapy and Reiki healing. He told me that it helped him from to recover from bed ridden condition.

Once again on behalf of BEC alumni community worldwide I assured him all support & help. I gave him the REBECA-2007 journal I had in my bag. He looked at it and smiled. We had few discussions of past (what we saw) & present (what it is now) of our beloved BEC, who is where, etc. This is quite normal when two BEX meet, isn't it?

I have downloaded photographs from my camera. As promised I am attaching recent photo of  Khoga da here (posted above). With this I request you to pray for their recovery and good health.

    God bless,

Just adding to Sukamal's comment, it may not be possible to arrange represetatives within a short span of time. Because our alumni is spread across all parts of India and rest of the world. I can think of two options -
    1) give one Indian postal address in the our website, so that people from various part of India send their contribution by check.
    2) Provide one savings back a/c number, so that money can be transfered through ECS.
