A Helping Hand

An appeal from Ayan Basu, '01CE

Respected senior and my loving junior BE College friends:

It is so unfortunate that I have to write such an email to all of you.

I am Ayan from Kolkata, batch of 2001 Civil engineering. After doing my engineering, I got a campus selection in TCS and worked there as a module lead, after that I got a better opportunity in WIPRO Kolkata and joined there as a senior engineer. But incidentally I went to London for an onsite requirement and met with a major accident there.
In fact I think some of you know that, I had an accident in 2006 in London. That time also Alumni association was informed regarding moneytary help. But I somehow managed the money from my own. But after 1.5 yrs, now when I am expecting a good job in Bangalore, my foot pain has incidentally increased drastically. I have contacted some of top orthopedic doctors. but all went in vain, infact Dr.Mrinmoy Nandi (who used to handle India’s cricket captain Saurav Ganguly’s case, he also said, sorry Ayan, your case is more critical than I expected. You should go to an orthopedic..he helped me to get an appointment with one of India’s top orthopedic Dr.M.S.Ghosh , but he also said orthopedically I am fine!!..Already during this period 2 lacs spent…because I didn’t have any medical insurance, as I was not working anywhere. Infact, I could not work in this condition. Then I was puzzled, my foot pain was incidentally increasing drastically.

Finally I got a contact of a doctor Dr.Gautam Das in Charnock hospital. I have never seen such a nice down to earth doctor in my whole life. His behavior is like my own brother. He has taken my case as a challenge. In fact he also said, your case is very-very critical..

He said to me, all the treatment you have done was wrong…It is not at all an orthopedic problem. This is called Neuropathic pain”!! which means, in the accident my foot-nerves broke fully. So the nervous system is not functioning properly. And that’s why I feel tremendous pain all the time (even when I am lying in my bed). If this treatment is not done ASAP, it can damage the foot PERMANENTLY!

You can read about this kind of disease in the following URL
http://www.painindia.net/index.php
or
at http://www.medicinenet.com/neuropathic_pain/article.htm

During the last 2 months, I have undergone 2 major operations. But all failed. Also during this period I understood I have to maintain a minimum bank balance of around 5 LACS!! all the time. As the operation might be executed anyday which will cost around 3.5 lacs...Also the post medication is so expensive that I have to maintain another 1 lac for that. Although one of my TCS Delhi friend already gave me 1 lac, as he is still my most loving friend..We used be room mates in Delhi..But for the rest of the money, I dont know, how will I manage!!!

Now it’s true that, after 6 yrs of job experience from TCS and WIPRO, I do have some money. Also I have a car and a house. But I can’t sell my car, because without it I will be totally movement less. Already for the last 2 years, due to the wrong treatment procedures, I have already spent around 5 lacs! Also I come from a simple middle class family. So after building our house, my dad is totally money-less. My brother also does a simple Government job. So he can’t help me with that amount of money. Also for the last one year, my foot doctor has been giving me some medicines, which cost around Rs 200 /tablet. Which I have been taking twice daily. Also a small ointment which cost Rs.1300! So I need to store some money for post operation medication also.

Alas! Once I used to spend money like anything in abroad. And Now I am craving for money. If you feel, I am honest in my request; please share some of your contribution to me. If all of you contribute some part of the total amount, cumulatively I can certainly get the total.

My account detail is as follows:
Bank:   ICICI Bank India (Salt Lake, Sector-1 branch)
Account Number:         <Available on request>

Please, please help.

Thanks in advance.
Ayan – Please, don’t let me die like this !!
