I saw in a Calcutta newspaper today that one or two political parties may demand inclusion of 50% reservation for students of Bengal and may object to passing of the NIT Amendment Act 2013 bill for conversion of Besu.
Can they really stop passing of the bill when UPA has majority in the parliament ?

Is the Besu bill going to be passed in this budget session?
There are reasons to be optimistic. If it is passed by Loksabha on 15th there will be enough time available for Rajyasabha to consider and pass the Bill.

One Political Party may create problem demanding 50% reservation for W.Bengal which is already inbuilt in NIT Act.
No. It's not supposed to be in the Act. There is written commitment from Secretary MHRD to the Chief Secretary, WB, in this regard.

But the real job starts now to maintain and elevate its standards (not only academics but also in character) to heights,so that others follow it.

    This is the fantastic news.
But as Aryada(Arya Sengupta) had suggested we should try to retain the identity of BE College,Shibpur in some manner in the new name of the university.

Amitabha Ghosh floated the idea of conversion to IIT earlier. Turning the idea into a reality was initiated by Santanu K in early ‘02. Subsequently on Dec. 25, ‘03, in a meeting presided over by Amitabhada, it was resolved to approach Gov/CM/EduM, MHRD & PM for their help. Santanu was tasked to be the Convenor of a committee to press the cause. We must recognize N.R. Banerjea’s role at the time. Then the progress stalled despite A. Ray’s efforts. With Santanu back, we are almost there!

Great news. Congratulations to all who worked so hard for this achievement.
It will be nice if the current administration publishes some kind of list of activities and growth agenda for the future IIEST. In otherwords, what will remain and what will go and what are the target dates?

We are reaching there, a destination when our alma mater will hopefully be academically and financially better that what it has been during the last few years. I suggest however that by IIEST, the college would not lose its identity
as BE College Sibpore, because that is the one we associate ourselves with and are proud of. We should try to retain this identity in some manner in the new name of the university.

I am a final-year student (2013). Naturally we are all elated at this news, particularly our juniors who will likely be spending their remaining time in this institute as IIEST students. But we must remember that despite upgradation, anything can go wrong. From my experience as a student for last 4 years, having seen this institute inside-out, I know a lot of aspects are gravely below par compared to IITs/NITs like placements, research & internship opportunities, industry collaboration, etc.

It is not done yet, but we expect it will be done in this Parliament Session.
Congratulations to VC Professor Ajoy Ray and his team for their untiring effort during the last four years. I would like to mention the names of Professor Santanu Karmakar and Dr. Amitabha Ghosh who started this work since 1995. Congratulations to both of you. Thanks for your sincere effort.

Thanks to the team of BESUS who are still working since 2004 for upgrading B E College to IIEST. Its not an one man effort to climb the ladder. The journey started from 2004 and the whole credit goes to our faculty members only whom we've seen working very hard on the issue since then.

    Time to celebrate
    No time to calibrate
    Show your degree of happiness
by your open and frank comments
Should we start the old debate
to settle if it is an upgrade?
    or merely a conversion.
    We can start a debate
    before folks start claiming their
    contributions for this historical
    event of BEC-BECDU-BESU-IIEST
and bill introduced finally by the central Govt.
If there is any one to denounce, please DO so now and announce.
