Dear fellow alumni/alumnae,

We are very excited to share the resolution of our last GAABESU Executive Committee meeting, held on January 11th 2014, to establish a new tradition of celebrating annual “Alumni Day” on the last Sunday of each year. Our plan is to observe the first “Alumni Day” on December 28th 2014 at our own BESU Campus.

The goal here is to reminisce our bygone days with friends and families and rekindle our camaraderie at our own campus.  The celebration will comprise of day-long fun filled family events organized by the alums for the alums and their families (irrespective of  GAABESU membership status). We like to fix the date of the annual event on the last Sunday of each year so that our local alumni/alumnae can plan their out of town vacations and our out of town alumni/alumnae can plan their Kolkata/India trip well in advance. So, before we proceed further, please block your Calendar for the first Alumni Day on last Sunday of 2014 which is December 28th.

We understand most of our alumni/alumnae meet regularly with their local alumni/alumnae in chapter events and/or meet fellow batch-mates in various batch events. While you meet your batch-mates during your Silver Jubilee, 30th, 40th and 50th Jubilee or even at annual reunion, you may like to meet your immediate juniors or seniors who stayed in the same hostel with you or with whom you played at Lords or Oval.  In addition, you will have a chance to network as well as socialize with other alums who may be working in the same industry or who have the same interest as you or who has attended same graduate school as you.  We like to coordinate your batch event in such a way that will allow you to celebrate your batch-event independently on prior Saturday and meet others next day on “Alumni Day”. We will collaborate with all willing batches to avoid duplicate efforts and costs for tents/pandals, decoration, lighting, etc. Details will be provided as they are available.

We have a preliminary schedule for the day consisting of activities having enough options for alums of all ages and their young or adult family members. We would like to finalize the schedule by the end of February with feedback from you.  Please let us know your thoughts about the preliminary schedule and events planned as shown below.

After my post on January 15th it came to my mind that making a documentary film on the journey of B. E. College (from where I graduated in Mining Engineering in 1968)from Calcutta Civil Engineering College in 1856 to IIEST in 2014 would be fitting tribute to our alma mater on the occasion of inaugural ceremony of Alumni Day. What do you think?

I am very sorry to say that I don't find any reason of this separate event. We already have our Re-union and BE College Annuals i.e REBECA. Then, why do we need such event separately? We already celebrate some sort of this during the fourth day of REBECA i.e Doshomi. We can enrich that very day by our intellectual contribution to make it more lively. GAABESU can help current students. I found it totally irrelevant.

Definitely I want to participate. I would like to emphasize that the Registration Fee should not be more than ₹1000 per alumnus with ₹500 per member of his family (children below 8yrs need not have to pay anything). It may also be considered whether transport can be arranged for willing participants to & fro 2/3 convenient points, if necessary, at a nominal charge. The Cultural Program & the 10K Run event on the Alumni Day should be discarded & the program may commence from 9 A. M. with Registration, online facility for which should also be provided. Souvenir /Commemorative volumes along with Mementos including a Scribbling Pad & a Pen should be gifted to the participants at the Registration Desk to facilitate noting down any important thing - there should not be any dearth of that.
If anything more comes to my mind definitely I shall pass on that to you in due course. I shall send my comments in prescribed format in reply to the email very soon.

I echo the sentiment of Subhamoy Ganguly. I have also heard about the Route 55 run they did in December and have been told that they wish to repeat the run every year. It would ideally be a good idea to have ONE run rather than two in such a short period. GAABESU has a much larger audience and thereby higher participation and the run is only a small part of their plan for the whole day. The other guys, however, have the run as their only plan.
The best solution is to see if it can be made as one run by involving the group of Route 55 to organize the GAABESU run.
I am planning to be a part of this kind of a run in December and hopefully there will be ONE event rather than everyone being forced to make a choice based on their personal affiliations. That would be an undesired situation.

Excellent idea and I think though the formalities is not completed by virtue we all are GAABESU member. It will be excellent to have a physical interaction planned under GAABESU for a fun filled Sunday with family and kids. I am blocking the dates.

Here is a quick update.
GAASBESU has a strong emphasis for healthy body and healthy mind in our community along with very strong Philantrophic philosophy. Hence, we built Alumni Swimming Pool and now are renovating Gym. This proposed activity is in line of GAABESU’s theme of healthy body and healthy mind.
From GAABESU, we reached out 1997 batch to lead this activity. All the names mentioned here are in touch with us with regular basis.

Dear Biman-da@GAABESU,
Thanks for the great initiative. I have a suggestion to make regarding the proposed first event of the day: the 10K/5K run/walk.
You may be aware that last month, a group of alumni ran 10K from Metro cinema to BEC. The run, named “Route 55 – The Road to BE College”, was conceived by Gourab Basu (’97 Min), custom T-shirts were designed by Sankha Kar Bhowmik, a.k.a. Lami (’97 Min), and included participants from several classes (batches). A few of these guys, in fact, are avid runners and have run long distance events in multiple continents. The “Route 55” event was quite a success, and received some coverage in the local press.
What you may not be aware is that the runners are already planning to hold a second edition of this event next winter, along with some modest philanthropic goals. I am sure, and I hope you’ll agree, that it is not very desirable to have two separate runs organized within a matter of weeks (one by GAABESU and the other by the Route 55-group). Rather, it will be fabulous if GAABESU could involve the individuals who were instrumental in organizing the maiden run. There will be a sense of continuity, and you will have a bunch of energetic folks who will help put together a great event.
If GAABESU thinks this to be a good idea, I can put you in touch with Gourab Basu, the man behind the maiden run. I am confident that he will be happy to work with GAABESU in organizing the run on a grander scale.

This is excellent idea. I think there could group activities involving those studied in different batches in same period. Involving spouses is also a subject of planning properly.

Excellent proposition.for the first one
I think the program is ok. depending on the response and success of the program from next year it may be extended to two days.
