Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) published ranking of institutions based on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on April 4.The teachers, researchers and students of IIEST, Shibpur are shocked to find that the ranking of IIEST, Shibpur at 83rd position. This is even more surprising to note this ranking as all along, in different other ranking systems, IIEST, Shibpur has stood quite high.

Initially there was some technical issue with uploading of institutional information into the ranking website, which was sorted out through repeated persuasions by the institute officials.  On a close scrutiny, it has been found that on research and publication parameter IIEST, Shibpur scored abysmally low, which is, in no way, a reflection of the actual scenario. Out of 100, IIEST, Shibpur scored only 22.20 in this parameter compared to 80.37 by NIT, Trichy and 74.72 by Vellore Institute of Technology.

Research is one of the strong areas of IIEST, Shibpur, where the institute is comparable to some of the best in the country. Faculty members have published more than 1800 papers in top tier national and international journals over the last three years with very high citation scores. Cutting-edge funded research projects of about Rs 44 Crores are under various stages of implementation. The institute has regular research collaborations with many reputed international institutes and corporate bodies. Additionally, more than 14 crores of industrial consultancy projects have also been taken up in the last three years.

We believe that this low score in research and publication parameter may have been due to some glitch in the system . We are taking it up with the ranking authorities for rectification.

Forget about MHRD. World Uni ranking by times higher education places IiT at 300 position and this position not changing for many years. IIEST has zero ranking. In India everyone dreams like Nehru. Look at China's impressive ranking every year. Wake up all of you.

It is worst to note the recent rankings by the MHRD for the technical institutes ,which is incorrect and primarily accused the standard and the matrix of the MHRD officials ,I believe the MHRD have not gone through the details and merit of the survey consultancy ,it is ridiculous to note the names featured as the top engineering colleges in the country ,IIEST the second oldest engineering college and par excellent in any parameter ranked as 83rd ,request to Director Mr.Royto take up this issue strictly with the MHRD and WITH THE MRS.S.IRANI minister Students of IIEST must not be demoralized as IIEST TOBE RANKED WITHIN 15 you can easily measure the standard of the survey ,However at the same time IIEST Governing body also to be alerted on different subjects 1) The first year syllabus which is not properly structured 2) in adequate infrastructure 3) Faculty and their qualification 4)interpersonal relations amongst teacher and student 5) To attract best talents from the other states ..

Ranking of IIEST / BESU as given in the list of MHRD has shown our institute at a very low level. This can not be correct by any measure. Institute like IEM Kolkata is shown above IIEST. It is not surprising when management institute like XLRI is shown at rank 13 below unknown institute like International Institute of Management Kolkata. We must take up the matter with MHRD very strongly for correction of our rank immediately.

What ever may be the issue..........research has to be taken more seriously at IIEST.
The mentality of majority of the faculty is that they have Government jobs. They teach some horrible things in class. Some faculties set long questions which tests the mugging up capability. Questions should test the understanding of concepts & applications. Sometimes I felt like I was pursuing History Honours and NOT engineering.
Once I as NOT able to solve an equation. It was stuck up for about 2-3 months. I decided to take help of some Mathematics Dept. faculty. Believe it or not, NONE helped me. I just went running after the faculty members of Maths Dept, but they were just reluctant to help me. When I used to go them, they used to shoo me away with excuses like I am busy now come later on, I have class now, I am going for tea, etc. In my whole tenure, the faculties I ran after did NOT get time to just guide me. I never asked them to solve the differential equation for me.
