Son of BEC alum wins Int Math Olympiad Gold - Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at 22:49

Son of B.E.College (IIEST), Shibpur alumnus wins Math Olympiad Gold

Collaborated by Bhanu Bhattacharya, 89ETC, MI and Swapan Saha, 88EE, CA

Ankan Bhattacharya may not have competed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last summer, but that didn’t stop him from bringing home his own Olympic gold medal.

Ankan, 17, stood among six of his peers raising the U.S. flag after being awarded a gold medal for his individual performance at the 57thInternational Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Hong Kong.

BECOllege.org

The IMO is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students, where the brightest mathematics students from more than 100 countries compete. IMO scores are based on the number of points scored by individual team members on six problems. On each day of the two-day competition, the teams have 4.5 hours to work on three problems.

This year, IMO was held in Hong Kong from July 6th to 16th and included teams from 109 different countries. The U.S. team’s score of 214 out of a possible 252 marks the second consecutive year the U.S. team has won first place. In addition, all six students in team USA received GOLD medals for their individual performances.

Ankan Bhattacharya, a 12th grader, lives in Canton, Michigan, USA with his mother (Namita Bhattacharya), father (Bhanu Bhattacharya) and his younger brother (Arpan Bhattacharya).

Bhanu Bhattacharya graduated from B.E.College in 1989 as Electronics and Tele Communication Engineer. He has been living in Michigan since 1998 and works for Ford Motor Company managing a group of database engineers. He also teaches “problem solving” mathematics to younger students during evening/weekend.

According to Bhanu & Namita, “Winning a gold medal in the International Math Olympiad has been Ankan’s dream from a very young age.  We are glad that he was able to achieve his dream”.

Known as “Mr. Math,” Ankan has won many state and national math competitions, including representing Michigan in national MathCounts three years in a row and is credited for achieving the highest and only perfect score in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition in 2015-16. He also was declared “Who Wants To Be A Mathematician (WWTBAM)” national champion in January, 2016.

Ankan hope to represent the U.S. team again in the 2017 IMO and plans to study mathematics or computer science during his college years.

The toddler who started spotting numbers wherever he went has come a long way. Managing a genius is not an easy task, Namita & Bhanu would vouch for that. A dream, coupled with focus, persistence and practice is a definite recipe for success.
